2014 - A Year of ________?

I love reading the various blog and news outlets when the start of a New Year is among us. It is absolutely fascinating what people predict the next 365 days to be like....however, I guess that since I sit here writing this post on the 19th of January, those predictions are only for the next 346 days. What do you think 2014 will be the year of?

My second favorite part of the New Year is seeing how long people can keep their goals for the New Year in tact. Some call these "resolutions," I just call them goals. I've listened to young adult goals (from my friends and coworkers) and many teen goals (from my students) and I am absolutely ecstatic about how passionate people sound about these personal endeavors. I wish we all stayed as positive about these goals throughout the year as we are during the month of January!

According to a website that I rather enjoy, Statisticbrain.com, a whopping 8% of Americans who make New Year Resolutions actually see them through. Perhaps this year is the year to change that statistic! Stay true to your goals....only you have the power of self-perseverance! What are your goals for 2014? (mine are below)

2014 Goals
1. Apply to the MEd in Higher Education Administration program at NC State
2. Take the GRE (and be happy with the results)
3. Inspire a student to apply for something they never thought they were good enough for
4. Be a more intentional friend (many of my "friends" know what this means, sometimes I get so wrapped up in things that I go off the map for weeks or even months on end)
5. Make it back to the USYS Region 3 Championships
6. File for USSF Grade 5 Referee
7. Strengthen the ITGS program at MHS
8. Shoot under 86 in a round of golf (full 18 holes)
9. Travel outside of the country? (It's a stretch, but I've always wanted to go!)
10. Complete a sub-7 minute mile again for the first time since HS

Tasks are much easier to achieve it you write them down. Then your friends become your accountability partners. Check back in every few months on how you are doing. Stretch yourself this year....do something you never thought you could!

And of course, to keep with my blog title, here is your bit of humor for this post. Since today is NFL Conference Championship day, I thought it only fitting for a bit of sports humor!

Football Animals
"During the Super Bowl, there was another football game of note between the big animals and the small animals. The big animals were crushing small animals and at half-time, the coach made a passionate speech to rally the little animals.

At the start of the second half the big animals had the ball. The first play, the elephant got stopped for no gain. The second play, the rhino was stopped for no gain. On third down, the hippo was thrown for a 5 yard loss.

The defense huddled around the coach and he asked excitedly,
"Who stopped the elephant?"

"I did," said the centipede.

"Who stopped the rhino?"

"Uh, that was me too," said the centipede.

"And how about the hippo? Who hit him for a 5 yard loss?"

"Well, that was me as well," said the centipede.

"So where were you during the first half?" demanded the coach.

"Well," said the centipede, "I was having my ankles taped.""

Keep Smiling,
Rob
